Trichotillomania and skin picking
Trichotillomania is a little known struggle that affects many. It is the disorder that causes the behavior of pulling out hair from one's body to the point where noticeable bald patches appear.
The urge to keep this behavior hidden or covered- up is great, so there is not much awareness of this disorder, and help can be difficult to find.
Like my work with self-injurers, my approach in working with adolescents, parents, and adults with this disorder is based mostly in cognitive behavioral techniques such as habit reversal training, stimulus control training, and acceptance and commitment therapy.
My stance is non-judgmental, compassionate, and comes from a place of understanding.
The nuances of trichotillomania are many, and my experience with people struggling with this disorder helps the individual feel less alienated and/or misunderstood.
