Self-injury
I work with adolescents, parents, and adults who are dealing with self-injury.
Self-harming behaviors can include: cutting, burning, punching walls or other forms of hitting, branding, and/or drinking harmful chemicals.
I understand self-injury as a coping skill to deal with unwanted emotions. It can serve to regulate and express emotion. It is usually a very secretive behavior that brings great shame and guilt in the individual.
Seeking help to recover from this behavior is the first step towards acknowledging the power that self-injury holds over the individual.
My work with self-injurers centers around cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I also stress the importance of language, as many self-injurers show a distrust that language can adequately express how intensely or deeply they feel their emotions.
My delivery of CBT techniques is non-judgmental, compassionate, and comes from a place of understanding.
In addition to CBT techniques, my approach also includes mindfulness and awareness training, as well as more depth work after the behavior itself is more under control.
